The NACCAS 2003 Job Demand Survey
shows that the professional salon industry continues to offer
terrific new employment opportunities to qualified job seekers.
Based upon a typical 50% commission factor, the average salon
income including tips is between $30,000 and $50,000/year. The overall job
outlook for cosmetologists is good through 2014. In fact,
opportunities should grow as fast as the average for all
occupations. New workers will be needed to fill openings due to job
growth and increasing demands for services and qualified
applicants. (Source: DOL Occupational Outlook Hand book

In 2004, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics, skin care specialists earned a median salary
of about $24,000, including tips. However, as they gain experience
and regular customers and master new techniques, estheticians can
earn up to $57,000, especially if they work in higher-end
spas.
Most employers pay
estheticians on commission, a percentage of the amount charged for
the work performed. They generally start new workers out at a
commission of about 45% of the fee the customer pays and increase
the percentage up to 50-60% once the esthetician gains
experience.
